Inclusive Summer Fun For All Ages & Abilities

Summertime is the perfect time to explore all our community has to offer families and children of all ages and abilities. Here’s a list of a few activities and inclusive local destinations you might want to add to your bucket list this summer.

·       Morgan’s Wonderland Inspiration Island – Morgan’s Wonderland now offers Splash Park only admission, perfect for these hot summer months. Your splash park ticket includes full access to Morgan's Inspiration Island, an Ultra-Accessible™ Splash Park. Offered only Sunday through Thursday. Accessible features include a warm water splash pad and waterproof wheelchairs.

·       Yanaguana Garden – Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Hemisfair Park’s Yanaguana Garden offers activities for everyone and is designed to accommodate wheelchairs and adaptive play. Accessible features include wheelchair access points at the Sand Play Area, the Boomerang, and Splash Pad; adaptive swing seats; a wheelchair-accessible sand digger; and more. Visit every fourth Saturday of each month for Inclusion Programming, a free outdoor event that includes arts and crafts, music, movement, literacy, health and wellness, and a caregiver corner. Inclusion Programming is made possible in part by Community First Health Plans.

·       San Antonio Parks – Free and open to the public, an early morning stroll through a San Antonio Park is a great way to enjoy the outdoors before the afternoon heat creeps in. While nearly all San Antonio Parks are either partially or fully wheelchair accessible, popular wheelchair-friendly park trails include:

o   McAllister Park Loop and Blue Loop Trail

o   San Antonio Mission Trail

o   Salado Greenway from Hardberger Park

o   Leon Creek Greenway

o   Cedar Flats Trail

·       Open Play – Morgan’s Wonderland Sports offers open play every Wednesday and Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. at their Ultra-Accessible™ three-acre sports center. Play softball, pickleball, basketball, and tennis – just bring your own gear! Special needs children and adults are always free.

·       San Antonio Botanical Garden, Sensory Garden – With over 30 acres of lush plants and blooming flowers, most parts of the San Antonio Botanical Garden are wheelchair accessible. Engage your senses of touch and smell in the Sensory Garden, which grows plants with interesting textures and scents. Braille signage and ceramic and bronze sculptures also appeal to the sense of touch.

·       The DoSeum – The DoSeum is the ultimate children’s museum for young learners of all profiles and abilities. The DoSeum is wheelchair accessible, including both levels of the building, and even the outdoor treehouse, which is accessible by either elevators or walkways. The DoSeum also accommodates Autism spectrum and sensory concerns and deaf or hard of hearing. Community First Health Plans is a proud sponsor of Free Family Nights at the Doseum on the first Monday of every month. Registration is required for all guests, and tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis.
